April is the month when I typically am scrambling to finish my tax returns and grimacing as I see what the bottom line for the previous tax year was. Since I am considered to be self-employed by the Internal Revenue Service, and thus have no taxes withheld, I have to pay taxes on April 15. It is not a joyful task, but one which I have resolved myself to face. People are certain it will always be so.
However, it is Jesus' death and resurrection that makes me know that the saying "there's nothing certain except death and taxes" is wrong. There is indeed something that is even more sure, even more certain than death and taxes. That is our own resurrection from the dead.
Because Jesus has risen and is alive today, we can be assured that death is, in fact, ended! While we will have to face death in this life on earth, the reality is that our death here is not the end. Jesus' resurrection made sure of that! For the death we all have and will experience is not the end, but the beginning of new life with our Lord and Savior in heaven. Death is not certain anymore because of Jesus!
Now what of taxes? While the Bible does talk about taxes, I don't recall reading about taxes in the new heaven and new earth. Taxes will be something else that we will leave behind when Jesus comes again. Those who work for the IRS will be given other jobs to do in heaven. Of course, I will have a different job as well. I don't imagine there is a lot of need for ministers in heaven.
In fact, I suspect that there are a number of jobs that will be made obsolete after Jesus comes. Doctors and nurses won't be needed because there won't be any more sickness or disease. Judges and lawyers won't be needed because sin and all its consequences will be no more. Life will be completely different in the new heaven and earth.
"Nothing is certain except death and taxes?" Just one more thing that Jesus' resurrection has completely changed. Praise God for that!
