Tusculum Elementary School is a public school located about 2 miles from our church building. Over the past several years, the neighborhood where this school is located has been an area where refugees from all over the world have settled. There are refugees from Burma, Nepal, Kurdistan and many other areas. There are over 20 different languages spoken by the students in the school and 99% of the students are at or below the poverty line.
The teachers and staff do their best to teach their students but many times they are so involved in providing basic needs to the students and their families that teaching becomes a significant challenge. They have a great staff there to help these families, many of whom speak little or no English, but the needs continue to be overwhelming.
Faith Church is now a Pencil Partner of Tusculum School and is also part of a group of churches and businesses who are partnering with Tusculum Elementary School to help these students and families. We have had clothing drives (shoes, hats, coats, mittens, underwear, school uniforms), provided fresh produce during the summer from our Community Gardens, school supplies and an occasional reader for the students as well. For the past few Christmases the children of Faith Church have also bought a Christmas gift for the refugee children at the school.
In may respects, instead of us going out into the world, God has brought the nations of the world to our doorstep and we are grateful for the opportunity to be the feet, arms and hands of Jesus as we care for the refugees in our community.
